Dr Mohan - Fistula

Dr. Mohan Chandra Regmi is one of the world’s leading obstetric fistula surgeons. Obstetric fistula, a serious childbirth injury caused by prolonged, obstructed labor without timely medical treatment, leaves women with a hole between the birth canal and bladder or rectum, leading to chronic medical issues and social isolation. Forced child marriage and early pregnancy, common in Nepal, are major causes.

Dr. Mohan is one of only six specialized surgeons in Nepal addressing serious fistula cases. For the past 15 years, he has worked to eradicate fistula by training surgeons, opening clinics, and advocating for state and NGO support for reparative surgeries. This photo series follows a day in his life: caring for post-cesarean patients, performing fistula operations, and consulting at the Civil Service Hospital of Nepal.
